The Seven Continent Marathon Runner

At Three Active we are so proud of our friend Kate that we wanted to share her accomplishment!  She just completed the Antarctica Marathon and has now run marathons on all seven continents! Her list of marathons is quite impressive, here is her seven continent line-up: North America- Two Boston Marathons (and many other U.S. Marathons), South America- Buenos Aires Marathon, Europe- Vienna Marathon, Africa- Kilimanjaro Marathon, Asia- Great Wall of China Marathon, Australia- Melborne Marathon and Antarctica- Antarctica Marathon.

Kate at the Great Wall of China Marathon

Her last marathon was Antarctica where she ended her seven continent marathon tour with a podium finish! In April 2008 I had the pleasure of cheering Kate on in the Vienna marathon. Kate is one of those natural athletes that makes running marathons look effortless, I remember watching her run by around mile 22; she looked so fresh and happy that it appeared that she was on mile two not twenty-two!

You may be wondering what’s up next for Kate? She says that she is working on completing marathons in all 50 states and also plans on climbing some challenging peaks!  Now that she has seven continents down, perhaps she will set her goals on the seven peaks?  Kate is an amazing and inspirational athlete, we wish her luck in her future challenges and congratulate her for her seven continent accomplishment!

Orca Spring 2011 Preview

If Orca triathlon clothing is good enough for two time World Ironman Champion Craig Alexander, it’s good enough for me.  In the U.S. Orca tri clothing lives in the shadows of more popular brands such as Zoot and 2XU, but it shouldn’t.  Orca’s quality is top notch, it is designed and tested by athletes for athletes, the designs are the direct result of working with professional athletes that help give insight as to what works best on the race course. Orca has two main clothing categories, the 226 and the Core category.

226 for the Endurance Athlete

Because of its performance, comfort, and durability the 226 line has established a reputation among endurance triathletes around the world, including double Ironman world champion Craig Alexander. 226 represents the number of kilometres in an Ironman event, products in the 226 line have also proved popular with athletes taking on other challenges, including multisport races and ultra long distance events.  Craig Alexander sported the 226 line while taking the Ironman World Champion title!

This season the 226 line features some great improvements. The 226 Kompression Tri Suit features  Orca’s 70 denier Killaskn Kompress fabric that is scientifically proven to provide optimum levels of active and graduated compression, it is used in the leg and shoulder areas to help athletes race further, faster.  This fabric is also antibacterial and has UPF50+ protection. Panels of the new Tri-Enduro mesh fabric are used across the back for higher levels of breathability and moisture wicking. The latest generation Vapour fabric has been refined for an even better fit and comfort.  The vapour fabric is a light breathable fabric with a high vapour transmission rate (the rate at which moisture through the fabric and away from the skin). The 3.5mm Tri-tech chamois gives increased protection on the bike, and comfort on the run. Other endurance distance-specific features include safety elastic pockets, reflective elements for visibility in low light, comfortable and low drag Hydroseal leg hems, and a new internal chest pocket, perfect for nutrition or a music player.

I love the look of the Orca 226 Tri Top (pictured),  the top is fit a little more relaxed than most Orca Tri apparel and it has sleeves that help protect against the elements.  It is a great multi-purpose top for racing, training and cycling.

Like the 226 Tri Suit the Orca 226 Kompression Tri-Tech Short (photographed with the 226 Tri Top) is constructed from Orca’s KillaSkn Kompress fabric and uses the same 3.5mm Tri-Tech chamois.  The short has a rear pocket and new thigh pockets for storage. There is increased leg coverage with the 9″ inseam and low drag of Hydroseal leg hems.

The Multi Distance Core Line

Orca’s Core line has a broad appeal, it has performance garments for every type of triathlete. The Men’s Orca Core Tri Tank is constructed from a combination of panels of AquaGlide, Tri-Mesh and Vapour fabrics, for speed through the water and comfort and breathability on land. With longer body coverage and an elasticated waist hem the top stays where it needs to through training and racing, while the concealed front zip provides additional ventilation when required. The Core Tri Tank now features two rear pockets with reflective trim and wider coverage of the Tri-Mesh fabric on the back for increased ventilation and moisture wicking. The Core Tri Pant features a new 6mm thick Tri-protect chamois, it is a hybrid triathlon chamois that provides additional padding and protection on the bike. The pant has a secure covered pocket across the back for storing nutrition and other items and has a reflective trim for visibility in low light conditions. Other key features include the comfortable and low drag Hydroseal leg hems, a rubber waistband and internal drawcord.

The latest generation of Orca’s popular Core Support Singlet provides women with even more performance and comfort, making it an ideal multi-activity top. There is increased use of Orca’s Tri-Mesh fabric on the back for enhanced breathability and two rear storage pockets, which include reflective trim for visibility in low light.  The AquaGlide fabric on the front of the singlet provides speed through the water and moisture wicking for comfort on land. An internal body-contoured mesh bra provides support during training and racing, while the elastic hem band keeps the singlet in place.

The Women’s Core Tri Short has a feminine v-shaped supportive waistband, and a secure covered pocket across the back for storing nutrition and other items, like the men’s version the pocket has which has reflective trim for visibility in low light conditions and features low drag Hydroseal leg hems, a rubber waistband and internal drawcord.

Orca has something for every Triathlete, hopefully the U.S. will be catching on to what the Aussies have known for years, that Orca makes great products. Just ask two time Ironman champion Craig Alexander.

Skirt Sports has a new print this season and it is a customer favorite!  There is a zebra resemblance with this new print that Skirt Sports has named Black Vinyl.  Run wild in this Race Belt Skirt and Multi Sport Tank combination!

From swim to bike to run to finish line celebrations, no course is too great to tackle in this Multi-Sport Tank! This top is unstoppable with its svelte form fitting style, color accenting design line and Racerback sass.  The built-in shelf bra with Cleavage Ally Pocket cradles the girls and enables them to sherpa your gels without chaffing.  This top ingeniously hits just below the waistband of the TRI Bottoms and it won’t ride up your tummy.  Pair it with the TRI Bottoms and RaceBelt Skirt and smile for the flashbulbs at the finish line!

In 2004, Nicole DeBoom won Ironman Wisconsin wearing the first-ever version of the RaceBelt Skirt. Her goal? To cover her butt on the run! Made for triathletes, but embraced by women of all shapes and sizes, this cover-up-styled skirt can be just as easily worn for the run of a TRI or a walk on the beach. With hidden snaps for your race number, there is no need to worry about safety pins. Silicone waistband gripper holds the RaceBelt Skirt in place; no more riding up to your “real waist!”.  Find it in Black or Black Vinyl at Three Active.

We also carry this fabulous print in our best selling Gym Girl Ultra Skirt and our Sexy Back Cycling Tank.

Body Bending Fitness Trends

Have you always wanted to be a cheerleader, but missed your calling in high school or college?  There might still be a chance to fulfill the dream of short skirts and pom-poms!  In Philly and coming to a NYC studio soon, is the Lithe Method, a highly effective fitness regime that burns fat and muscle!  The classes are a combination of cardio, cheer, and sculpting.  The Lithe Method was developed by Lauren Boggi, a former U.S.C Cheerleader .

Isaac Peña, left, and Marlo Fisken, back, attend a class taught by Jonathan Nosan, right. Photo provided by New York Times.

If cheerleading isn’t your thing and if you like to stand on your hands for an extended period of time, perhaps a contortionist class taught by Jonathan Nosan is for you?  Most of the students in Jonathan’s classes use their bodies artistically for a living.  I think that most of us would agree that we get enough time on our hands in yoga, but if you are looking for more of a challenge and live or travel to NYC, check out a class by Jonathan.

The Bar Method workouts have become increasing popular thanks to Natalie Portman’s dancer body in Black Swan. Bar based workouts integrate the fat burning format of interval training, the muscle shaping technique of isometrics, and the elongating principles of dance conditioning.  Many states offer Bar Method classes, but if they don’t have a class in your area or if you prefer to stay in the comfort of your own home, you can also buy the video.

Another at home option is the Ugi Ball,  Ugi is a  weighted ball and 30-minute workout that can go anywhere.  Created by three busy moms and fitness enthusiasts that wanted to create a challenging, effective and sustainable workout that could fit into their busy lifestyles. If you are short on time and looking to refresh your home-based fitness routine perhaps a Ugi ball is in your future?

Don’t give up the dream of being a cheerleader, ballet or Cirque de Soleil Dancer, instead bring out the inner cheerleader or dancer through a new fitness routine!
